A 17.4% of the country's population is at risk of poverty, when only consumption expenditure coming from purchases is taken into consideration (up from 17.1% in 2021), with the risk falling to 13.4% of the population (12.2% in 2021) when final monthly household expenditure is taken into consideration, regardless of the mode of acquisition (ownership-occupancy, own produced goods, free goods and services).
Hellenic Statistical Authority, in a survey on family budgets (based on a sample of 6,196 private households) showed that average annual household spending on purchases totaled 19,204 euros (1,600.34 per month), up 12.7% from 2021. A 50% of households spend more than 1,289 euro per month. The share of average spending on food and beverages and housing of the poorer 20% of the population accounted for 58.1% of households, while the share for the wealthier 20% of the population was 25.6%.
The highest average annual spending was recorded in Attica (22,305.84 euros and the lowest in Central Greece (12,828.56 euros).
At fixed prices, average annual spending rose 4.6% because of the high inflation rate. Average annual spending per person was 7,516.32 euros in 2022, up 12.7% from the previous year.
